What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a form of “talking therapy”. The aim is to free blocked energies in the mind, body and soul through the process of catharsis. This is developed by providing a safe and confidential environment, in which one can free associate and express freely. In time, together, meaning is made of it all. It is a process in which one can understand oneself better. This understanding happens on a deeper level, addressing symptoms and issues at its root cause to bring about a long-lasting change and not just a temporary relief.
At the heart of psychodynamic psychotherapy is the recognition that our complex and often unconscious emotional life is a fundamental part of being human. Our feelings and our experiences, from the moment we are conceived, shape who we are. Sometimes we don’t understand the beliefs and fears that shape our way of looking at and living in the world, as they have become ingrained and automatic. We can find ourselves repeating destructive behaviours, feeling stuck in unhappy relationships and stunting our emotional, creative and professional development. The insight gained through greater self-awareness can stop these negative patterns stemmed from the past, alleviating emotional suffering and bringing about positive, long-lasting change in the present.
Additionally, our mind and body are interconnected. Our mind influences our physical health and vice versa. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help improve physical health issues.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy offers a place to be heard.
“We think we listen, but very rarely
do we listen with real understanding,
true empathy.
Yet listening, of this very special kind,
is one of the most potent forces for change
that I know.”~ Carl Rogers
